There is a reason why Sri Lanka is often referred to as a paradise island. From sunny beaches, undulating mountains and dense rainforests to ancient ruins, wildlife parks and religious sites, there is a diverse range of places and experiences for visitors to enjoy. There are many must-visit locations that are to be found on the itineraries of a majority of travellers. While we highly recommend that you see them, we would also like to suggest that you go off the beaten touristy track and explore some of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems
As a guest at Mount Havana, you will have access to a whole host of unusual locations both in Gampola, where our villa is situated, and in the neighbouring city of Kandy. Although both these cities are well known, travellers tend to flock to the same locations. Because they stick to the better-known sites, a majority of visitors to Kandy and Gampola miss out on some amazing experiences that can give them a deeper insight into Sri Lanka. Luckily for you, we are able to help you identify some underrated travel spots that you can visit and enjoy
Kandy: beyond the standard fare
Kandy almost always features on the list of must-see cities in the island and rightly so. There are a number of iconic sites you wouldn’t want to miss, like the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake and Botanic Gardens. The city also has quite a few lesser known locations that are as fascinating as their more popular counterparts. Some of the places we recommend to you are:
Udawattakele Forest Reserve
A lush forest sanctuary just minutes from Kandy’s city center with scenic walking trails, ancient cave dwellings, and rich birdlife.

Galmaduwa Temple
An architectural marvel with Indo-Islamic influences, this unfinished temple stands out with its unique design and serene atmosphere.

Huluganga Falls
Located about an hour from Kandy, this cascading waterfall flows through a scenic tea estate, offering a refreshing escape from the city’s bustle.

Teligama Falls
A lesser-known but charming waterfall on the outskirts of Kandy, perfect for a quiet nature walk or a relaxing dip in the cool waters.
Bahirawakanda Meditation Centre
A hidden retreat near the iconic Bahirawakanda Buddha statue, offering guided meditation sessions in a peaceful setting.

Gampola: more than just temples
Gampola is another city which is often recommended to tourists. Also an ancient kingdom like Kandy, this city is best known for its multiple temples, such as the Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Lankathilaka Raja Maha Viharaya and Embekka Devalaya. There were so many temples built in the Gampola era that the region was named ‘Temple City’. However, there is more to Gampola than its temples. Here are some of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems that you can explore in Gampola:
Ambuluwawa Tower and Biodiversity Complex
Perched atop a hill, this multi-religious site offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of central Sri Lanka. The daring climb up the spiral tower is a must for thrill-seekers.

Dolosbage mountain range
A hidden paradise for hikers, this range features misty peaks, rolling tea plantations, and cascading waterfalls, making it perfect for nature lovers

Kotmale Reservoir and Viewing Point
Overlooking the majestic Kotmale Dam, this serene spot is ideal for picnics and offers stunning panoramic views of the lush surroundings.

Surathura Ella falls
A secluded waterfall hidden within dense greenery, offering a tranquil retreat for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Pusulpitiya Raja Maha Viharaya
A peaceful temple nestled in the hills, believed to have once safeguarded the sacred Tooth Relic before it was moved to Kandy.

While popular attractions often steal the spotlight, visiting these lesser-known travel spots offers a more tranquil and authentic experience. Away from the crowds, these sites reveal breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and unique adventures that go beyond the typical tourist trail. Whether it’s discovering ancient temples, hiking through misty mountains or finding serenity in nature reserves, these places give you the opportunity to connect more deeply with the country. You can immerse yourself in local traditions, enjoy unspoiled scenery and experience a side of Sri Lanka that remains refreshingly untouched. By venturing into destinations that are not as famous you will gain a richer, more personal appreciation of the island’s beauty and history.
