Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Top Spots for Solo Female Travelers

In March of this year, Timeout Magazine ranked Sri Lanka as number one on its list of Best Places for Solo Female Travel in 2024. It recommends the island as, “The perfect first stop for female travellers wanting to dip into South Asia.” With no intention of undermining this accolade, we would like to note that Timeout seems to be late to the party. The Indian Ocean nation has been a hot favorite among solo female travelers for years now, with some visiting the country four times or more!

And it’s no wonder that visitors keep coming back. Although a tiny little island, Sri Lanka’s geographical diversity rivals some of the larger countries in the world. Plus, it has a rich history that spans a couple of millenia. The local cuisine is beyond delicious and there are multiple flavors and varieties. The people are ultra friendly – they are so warm that the country has gained a reputation as being one of the friendliest nations in the world.

As small as it may be, there is a lot to see and do in Sri Lanka. If you are a first time visitor, it is possible to become overwhelmed by the options available to you. In order to help you figure out your itinerary, we have compiled a Sri Lanka travel guide of our  top five recommendations of places to visit for solo female travelers.

Colombo

Located on the southwest coast of the island, Galle is best known for its fort, which was constructed by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch. Admire the beautiful colonial architecture by taking a walk along the streets of the Galle Fort. You can also check out the museum, lighthouse and the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. There are plenty of cute cafes located within the fort for you to cool off and catch your breath. If you are looking for some sun and sea, the world-renowned beaches of Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa are a short drive from Galle.

Sigiriya

Also known as ‘Lion Rock’, Sigiriya has been dubbed the eighth wonder of the world. This rock fortress was selected by King Kashyapa as his capital in the fifth century AD. Access to the former fortress is through a giant lion’s mouth. The ascent is not too challenging and you can view the colorful frescoes on your way up. The summit has ruins of the ancient palace and offers a stunning view of the surrounding areas.

Better still, villa chefs and kitchen staff will be able to recommend local specialities. They can prepare local meals that will take you on a flavourful culinary adventure. As you tantalize your taste buds, you will also get the rare opportunity to learn about each dish, its blend of ingredients and its cultural significance.

Ella

If you like mountains and cool weather, then you must go to Ella. The lush green of the rolling tea plantations is a soothing balm to the troubled mind. You can revel in the natural beauty of your surroundings by hiking up Little Adam’s Peak. The Nine Arches Bridge is an architectural marvel that seems to defy even modern technological capabilities. Ella also boasts many beautiful waterfalls, of which Ravana Falls and Diyaluma Falls are the most popular. The best way to travel to Ella is by train as the journey is renowned as one of the most picturesque in the world.

Kandy

Kandy, situated in the central highlands, was the last capital of ancient Sri Lanka. It is home to The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known as Dalada Maligawa in Sinhala, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the heart of Kandy city is the Kandy Lake, and a walk around it is highly recommended. You can meander around the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens appreciating the pretty flowers and unusual plants. If you happen to be visiting in August, then you must get a ticket for the Esala Perahera, which is a grand religious pageant featuring drummers, dancers, people on stilts and elephants.

In conclusion,

A short drive from Kandy, in another former kingdom, Gampola, is the luxury boutique villa, Mount Havana. Located within a picturesque tea estate, this villa brings you close to nature while simultaneously giving you all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
